Mario Kart DS is a go-kart racing game developed and published by Nintendo for Nintendo DS console.
It was initially released in North America, Australia, Europe, and Japan in 1995, and later in South Korea in 1996.
The game has two modes – Single Player mode allows you to race against 7 computer controlled karts (or zero if Time Trial), and Multi-Player mode that will enable you to race or Battle with upto eight people.
The goal of the game is to race against the rival and finish the game in the first position or to Finish the Lap in the fastest time possible.
You can select the type you want to play in Single or Multi-Player Mode like Grand Prix, Battle, Mission, etc.
You can also select the CC of your engine which varies from 50cc to 150cc and the larger the CC; the more will be the speed and the competition.
Select your favorite racer from a total of twelve characters from Super Mario Series with eight being unlocked from the beginning while the rest have to be unlocked.
Different Maps are also introduced in the game for different Cups. Therefore, you will enjoy a distinct map to race for every cup you pursue.
Several Power-ups are also present in the game that will make this game enjoyable and unpredictable as anyone can use a power-up to win over the rival.
Features of Mario Kart DS

Play Single Player –
A Single Player is a mode in which only a single player is controlled manually and rest the computer controls all the players.
There are five modes in Single Player – Grand Prix, Time Trial, Versus, Battle and Mission.
In Grand Prix, you have to select between three Engine Classes(CC) options available, i.e., 50cc, 100cc, and 150cc.
More the cc, larger is the engine, more is the speed, and stronger is the rival so before selecting a large Engine Class(CC) make sure that you race in smaller CC.

You can race for eight different cups – Mushroom, Flower, Star, Special, Shell, Banana, Leaf and Lightning.
To win any cup, you have to race on a total of four maps that are distinct for every Cup, so you have a total of 32 maps in Single Player.
In all the four maps you must secure a position between first and fourth to be qualified to go to the next map.
If you finish the race at a fifth position or under then, you will be ranked out of the race, and the whole race must be replayed.
You will receive different points for finishing the race between first and fourth position in all the maps that will be added at the end to determine the winner.
For finishing at the first position you will get 9 points, the second position holder will receive 6 points, third will get 3 points, and the fourth one will receive 1 point.
After racing in all the four maps if you secure 1st to 3rd position then you will receive a Gold, Silver or Bronze cup as a reward depending upon your position.
But ending in the fourth position will not give you any Cup. In the ceremony, all the first three winners will receive their cup, and you will be crying near the podium.
Then the Race must be restarted, and you will have to again race in all the maps to win the race in the first to the third position.
The Second Mode in the Single Player option is known as Time Trial.
Time Trial is a mode in which you race intending to set the best lap time or overall course time.
You can select the racer of your choice and can race on one of the four maps depending on your preference that are distinct from each other.
To make sure that you focus on racing there are no rival(computer) or Power-ups present in this mode although stoppers are there to slow you down.
This mode is solely based on your driving skill as no rival or power-up is there to distract you.
In the end of the race(three laps) you will be shown the time of completion of all the laps and the time of best lap will be considered as a new record in the game.
You are also given an option to Replay the Race or to Save As Ghost.
Save Ghost is a new feature which allows you to save your race after the end and in your next race, this Ghost will appear performing in the game.
Basically, you can save your best race as Ghost and race with them in further games to improve your timing to a larger extent.

In Battle Mode, there are two modes – Balloon Battle and Shine Runners in which you can battle against your friends or computer controlled karts.
This version introduced a new mode in Single Player, i.e. Missions in which apart from the Normal race you can complete various Mission.
There are a total of 7 Seven levels with every level containing Eight missions that you have to complete to get forward in Missions.
The Initial missions are the easiest one, but as you go forward, you will have to complete hard missions.
After the eighth mission of every level, you will fight a boss that is the strongest rival from that level and after defeating him the next level will be unlocked.
In Versus Mode you can either race against your friends or computer-controlled Karts on your desirable track.
Upto Eight Players can play this game, and all of them can choose their favorite racer among eight of the Mario Series Character.
This game is played by friends to show their skills; therefore, no computer rival is present in the game to slow you down.
Coins and Power-ups will be present to make sure that the race is enjoyable and you can attack the other player to slow him/her down.
Race Multi-Player –
Multi-Player mode is a mode in which more than one person control the player manually.
In this game, upto eight people can simultaneously play the game and race against each other.
There are three modes that you can choose in Multi-Player mode – VS, Balloon Battle, and Shine Runners.
In VS Mode all the racers race among each other to finish the game in the shortest time and win the race.

Another mode is Known as the Battle where there is two mode – Balloon Battle and Shine Runners in which upto Eight players battle with each other in one of the four maps.
In Balloon Battle, a Balloon is attached with every kart that can be re-inflated upto four times and a maximum of three balloons can be attached with the Kart.
After you have re-inflated your balloons for four times, you can steal the balloons of other Karts by boosting into them.
The goal is to pop all the balloons of the rival to win the game by either boosting into the rival or by throwing some Items like Shells.
Several Power-Ups can be picked up from the Power-Ups Boxes on the track and can be used to pop the balloons of the rival.
Power-Ups Like Triple Red Shell and Starman helps the most to pop the opponent balloons.
If all the players pop each other balloon at the same time and there is no balloon left on any player, then the game will draw.
Choose A Racer –
There are a total of twelve racers you can choose from the Super Mario Series in this game.
Those twelve characters are – Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Toad, Yoshi, Bowser, Wario, Donkey Kong, Daisy, Dry Bones, Waluigi, and R.O.B.

There is also a thirteen character in the game named Shy Guy that is only available in the Download play version of Mario Kart DS in random colours.
All these characters are divided into three weight class that have their own pros and cons and influence the way these character race.
The three weight class are – Lightweights, Heavyweight, and Middleweight.
Lightweights are those characters that have high acceleration as they are benefited from their low weight like Peach, Yoshi, Toad, Dry Bones, and Shy Guy.
Heavyweight are those characters that have low acceleration, but high top speed as they have more weight and thus the acceleration decreases like Bowser, Donkey Kong, and R.O.B.
And Finally there are Middleweights who have a normal weight, and thus they have normal acceleration and normal top speed like Mario, Luigi, and Waluigi.
Complete Missions –
In Mario Kart DS there is an inclusion of a new mode known as Mission in which you have to complete various missions to get a higher ranking.
There is a total of seven levels with each level having a total of eight missions and a Boss whom you will fight at the end.

Fighting the boss is also a mission in which you have to defeat the boss, by the way, said at the beginning like “Knock him off the Stage.”
As the level increases the difficulty of missions also increases so you will have the easiest missions in the first level, but difficult ones at the seventh.
If you get atleast a single star in the first six levels, then the seventh level will be unlocked that has the most challenging mission and the Boss.
After completing the missions and levels, your rank will increase or decrease depending on the time left or taken by the Kart.
Well, in this mode there is a twist, none of the unlockable characters can play this mode, so you are left with the initial eight characters.
Also, Bowser and Donkey Kong does not fight the boss as they are heavyweight, so their one hit is more powerful than any other Kart.
Use Power-Ups –
Power-ups are special powers that are obtained by getting the Special Box from the Track.
New Power-ups that are introduced in this game are Golden Mushroom, Triple Bananas, Bob-omb, Blooper, and Bullet Bill.
Golden Mushroom allows you to have an unlimited boost for a limited duration that can make your kart faster than others for short duration.
The Triple Bananas is an ultimate form of a Banana Peel where instead of a single Banana you get a bunch of three bananas that you can throw on Track to spin out enemies.
Bob-omb is a Bomb that you can throw on the Track, and it will explode after a few seconds, any Karts in the Explosion radius will spin out.

Blooper is a Squid type animal that that sprays ink on all the karts in front of you, temporarily blocking their view for a short duration.
Bullet Bill is a new item that transforms your kart into a Bullet Bill helping you to float in the air and knock any Kart in contact.
Getting a Bullet Bill also increases your speed a little bit helping you to overcome your rivals.
Rest all other power-ups are taken from the previous generations.
Banana Peel can be dropped on the track or thrown in front of the driver. Anyone who walks over the Banana Peel will spin out resulting in zero speed and lost control for a moment.
If the other racer is using the power of Star or Boo, then he will be invulnerable from Banana Peel.
A Banana Peel can also be used to block the Koopa Shell coming from behind by dragging it behind the racer.
A Boo power-up makes the player(you) invisible for a moment and also give the ability to steal the item of an opponent.
A Green Shell is a Koopa Shell that can be thrown forward or backward and hitting this robust shell make the racer to spin out.
This game has many power-ups from the previous version, and many newly introduced Power-ups make the game more enjoyable.
Fake Item Box looks like an item Box but has a red color with an inverted Question mark that will spin out the enemy just like the Banana peel but will do more damage.
Lightning is a Power-up that will electrode all the racers(expect you) with a sudden electric shock that will shrink every rival lowering their speed and spinning them out.
Once shrunk the speed of the racer decreases considerably low.
A Spiny Shell is the rarest power-up in the game that can be taken by any second player.
When used it first shoots like a shell and then it locks on to the first player traveling in the middle of the road and thrashing anyone coming in the way.
Triple Green Shell, Mushroom and Red Shell are the upgraded version of Green Shell, Mushroom and Red Shell power-up that let you used them thrice instead of one.
